One of the stupidest questions I've ever seen!

Looking up information on living dysphagia-- Hey, after 25 years, I think I do pretty well, but more info never hurts --I came across this:

Long-term outcome after stroke: does dysphagia
matter?

DUH!

I don't have the patience to read the entire article, but here it is if you want to see it.

Just curious... What seat cushion do you swear by? I can't really trust the wheelchair shop I would normally go to, and my Jay 2 is wearing out. I need something really cushy yet discrete. (Sitting on a feather pillow will not impress at job interviews.)

Booking Rasputina to play....

Im gutted that i missed Rasputina play in london and since those were the only two gigs they have played in the UK I didnt want to chance them never playing again, i know some promoters who put on fairly well known (ish) bands at venues local to me (leeds!) and I was wondering if anyone had ever tried to arrange a recital with Rasputina before? Any help would be greatly appreciated....

*edit*  im not sucessful at clarity today, I just wondered if any fan organized recitals had been pulled off anywhere before?

and yes,  I'm aware that to arrange a recital I will have to contact the band/their manager, that really wasnt my question.

Lightning Bug Butt

I went out to Better Bargains today in search of sunglasses (mine are lost in the Japanese Gardens), but I didn't find any. Instead, I picked up some clothes for my etsy shop. This makes up for the fact that I was too sleepy this morning to go to the bins.

Check it:

Ariel, do you have a skirt like this?? It looks familiar somehow.

I also took this funny photobooth picture for Rachel today:

I look weird! I look... tanned? I'm not, it's just the photo. Also my hair is too long and I have to cut it off. Some guy on etsy contacted me about buying a bunch of my zines to sell on his "distro tour", whatever that means. He wanted to buy some wholesale, but I paid $1.37 to make each one, and I'm selling them for $2, so how can I really lower the price for him? I don't think I can. It cost $1.37 because I had to pay for the more expensive, $0.28 per page double-sided copies (on the nicer, thicker laser paper) and $0.25 each to have them folded/stapled. I know it's retarded to pay for that, but I don't have access to a long-armed stapler and they don't have one for you to use at kinkos ("fed ex kinkos"), those jerks. Anyone have any good suggestions for me as to how I can lower my production costs? Maybe I should be going to the IPRC? I don't know. Please help me I am a beginner.

Also, haha, please, don't tell me that I should do the zine symposium. So many people have said that already! I am considering it, but I don't know it I will be available. I am expecting a few visitors in August and hopefully I will get a change to go to Canada that month too, so I don't know. I just do not know. Obviously it's cheap and if I can do it, I will. YAY

Ok, my wrists hurt from all this computer use today. We just saw a cool commercial that is anti-online-bullying.

3:21 is too late for lunch

I'm making our lunch now. It's so late! We're having jasmine rice, broccoli and some bok choi-style green thing with sweet chili sauce. Boring, whatever. We don't have white rice very often, man that stuff tastes like candy! It took me sooo long to get all the comics and etsy stuff packaged up this morning! It was fine though, I was chatting away with Rachel & Lisa on googz so it was good times. The post office was slow, I think everyone's on vacation or something so it was one regular worker and one dude from the back who had a hard time with the computer.

I am going to do this survey now. Please feel free to respond with your answers in the comments.

Low Fat Diet Linked to Reduced Risk of Ovarian Cancer

A recent study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute suggests that there is a link between a low fat diet high in fruits, vegetables, and grains and a reduced risk of ovarian cancer. The discovery came from the Women's Health Initiative Dietary Modification Randomized Controlled Trial over 8 years. The trial assigned 20,000 women to the diet change group and had 30,000 women maintain their current diet. The diet change group limited their fat intake to only 20 percent of their total calories and had to eat 5 or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables in addition to 6 or more servings of grains.

During the first four years of the trial, researchers discovered no link between diet and ovarian cancer, but during the latter half of the study there was a drop of 40 percent in the risk of ovarian cancer in the low fat group compared to the unchanged diet group. Women who had the highest fat intake at the start of the trial and had been assigned the diet change were were found to have the greatest reduction in risk.

Researchers suggest continuing to track participants to see the longer term effects between a low fat diet and appearance of cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, ovarian cancer is the 8th most common cancer among women in the US and nearly 22,500 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year and nearly 15,300 will die from it. Ovarian cancer mostly occurs in older women with two thirds of cases seen in women aged 55 and older.

MY BIG MOVIE!!!

I realize that two videos in one day is totally unheard of for me, but I took a lot of videos while Lee was here cause I knew I wanted to make a little vidblog. So here it is!

It was a really frustrating computer day so I am stoked that I have something to show for it, even if it did take forever. I finally learned how to add audio to video! Ha ha. I am a video editing baby.

WATERFOLK

This Asian girl took the photo for us, but not before she quizzed Lee on trails and waterfalls. I have a Mr. Dressup shirt. JEALOUS? Of course, no one knows who he is in this country but that man was a big part of my childhood.

Thoughts on the Bachelorette episode: I'm glad she kicked off that dude, and I bet the dude with the kid will win. Sorry Jesse, but Deanna knows that you just want to "shred" all the time!!! JUST SNOWBOARDING AMBITIOUS KIDZZZ!!

Speaking of TV, we finished watching season three of The Wire and it was so good! The season seemed really slow but then so much happened at the end. Here's a spoiler for losers like us who are still watching it for the first time: I was so glad when Stringer finally got shot. Fuck you, Stringer Bell! You big nerd! I felt like the whole Brother Mouzone/Omar team-up was a little too fanfic-y or something, but obviously it was great. McNulty is so bad at hiding his accent, but holy shit, did y'all know that Stringer Bell is actually a BRITISH DUDE? Apparently his voice is sooo different, so he has to fake his actor voice when he meets fans because it freaks them out! Weird.

Ok back to the Bachelorettell-all interview with the men time.

Waaaalllllll-eeeeeeee

I finally uploaded the rest of my photos from Lee's visit. We did our best hosting job to date, the verdugo hotel is now a five star vacation spot, ha ha. Let me continue from where I left off:

On Friday dalas and I stayed home and got some work done while Lee did some exploring at the zoo and went on a sweet food tour downtown. Before he came to town he mentioned something about missing out on some margarita cupcakes, so I told him I would make some while he was in town. And, I did! I also bought margarita mix since I had to get the tequila for the cupcakes, and I'm so glad I did. I love margaritas! Who doesn't? They are so delicious and summery. Too bad every single mix at the liquor store has high fructose corn syrup in them. WTF why isn't the internet loading my photos. I hate this computer.

Okay, I restarted the computer.

The cupcakes were great! They turned out perfectly and I was relieved, because the last couple of times I tried to make cupcakes they didn't come out at all.

EAT IT!

That night we got to see WALL-E for free! dalas' friend Cabel bought a whole showing of the movie and gave the tickets out to pals, so it was really fun. I loved it. We all loved it. Who doesn't love Wall-E? If you don't love that movie, there is something wrong with you. It's true. We came back and did some summer boozin' (margaritas).

Saturday was our BIG DAY! We woke up early and took the bus to Screen Door, a Southern place on Burnside that makes really really delicious food. This was my build-a-breakfast, consisting of veggie sausage, veggie gravy, giant buttermilk biscuit (I did half with gravy, half with jam), fruit cup. Mmmm. dalas ordered a chicken biscuit sandwich and it was SO HUGE so we had to come home with leftovers before heading out to the Washington Park area.

We took the MAX and went out to Washington Park. We hiked our fave trail (Wildwood) and saw a chipmunk! It was my first Oregon chipmunk, I was so excited. We walked to the rose garden and looked at the flowers. Some of the varieties have really funny names, like, "In the Mood" or "Sultry". We were up there a few weeks ago but the roses weren't out yet.

It was our first 100 degree day!

This is just a small area, the rose garden is soooo huuuuuge.

Afterwards we climbed up to our secret joint-smoking spot near the Japanese Gardens and got stoned before heading into the supreme mellow zen zone that is the Japanese Gardens. Sooo nice in there. If you live in Portland and haven't gone yet, do it. It's only $8 and it's so beautiful.

Inside this building they had a neat glass art exhibit and some ikebana. Last time we were here it was all ikebana (fancy floral-art arrangements), they always have something cool.

Carefully combed rocks.

This photo is so relaxing. The Japanese gardens rule. They are so carefully cared for, and it was really neat to be in there after hiking through Washington Park, which isn't manicured like this.

Calm room

I love how all the different rocks look on the ground.

This lady had a crazy outfit on and the colors looked nuts against all the green.

Feet. This is the bench where I left my sunglasses. It's ok though, I didn't like them anyway! Now I need to find a new pair though.

Once we were super mellow-ed out from the gardens we decided to head home so that we could all take showers and cool off before heading out to dinner. Lee was leaving that night at midnight, so we had to fit in Farm. We saved the best for last!

On our way to dinner

I liked the flower arrangement this time.

We weren't planning on buying drinks at Farm but we saw some other people getting these mojitos and we couldn't resist. They were good.

Mmmm baked brie. We get this every time now because it's so amazing. It has fruit and toasted nuts on top! Yum. The first time we had it it was apples!

Porcini mushroom gnocci. I ordered this and split it with dalas. We always do a meal-swap now because it means we get to have more things. Although, we almost always order the seasonal gnocci and ravioli because they are so enticing and incredibly delicious. Lee was really stoked on the food too, Farm is the best!

Mmm asparagus ravioli!

After dinner we went to Union Jack's, the "alternative" strip club. It was right down the street, and since Lee & I had never been to a strip club before we figured it was just something we had to do, ha ha. It was not what I expected, but it was pretty funny. I won't say exactly what happened to our guest, but let's just say that it was the best/funniest way to end an awesome vacation. No one can leave Portland without falling in love with it, especially if you come here when the weather is great.

Yesterday dalas and I chilled out at home and watched the whole fifth season of Peep Show. OMG, we love it. It hurts to watch and it hurts when it ends because there are only six episodes per season. Now it is hot every day and it's great. My tomato plants have grown so much in the past few days, it's insane. My beans are doing really well, so are my squashies and my peas are starting to be ready to eat! I just snuck a peek at our CSA's blog and I am pretty excited about what we are getting this week. I am roasting veggies right now and they smell good. I finished my Norway comic today and it's totally ready to go out into the world! I am going to make a new post about it.

Also, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY LISA ([info]xxxooolisa) AND PHILL! You guys are our cool east coast married twins. I wish you dudes many more awesome years of happy marriage club. See how awesome these guys are:

The Importance of An Acid Reflux Remedy

Most of us face acid reflux at least once in our life. Acid reflux is most commonly known as Heart burn. There are many symptoms to the problem however, some of the main symptoms include
Burning in throat
Burning in chest
Bitter taste in mouth

The symptoms are usually mild but there are also occasions when the sensation reaches to such a peak that it makes you wonder whether you are having an actual heart attack. Due to the pain involved t is very important to have prior knowledge about the acid reflex remedies for this problem. The knowledge is bound to come in handy in case of an unexpected attack.

There are certain remedies for acid reflex. One of the main reasons for acid reflex is food. It is very important to avoid certain types of food in order to avoid acid reflex. The first thing you need to do is which of the food you intake is triggering the process. Different people are allergic to different foods including onion, garlic, citrus fruits, tomatoes, peppermint and chocolate. Some beverages that have a concentration of caffeine and alcohol are also cause of the problem in some people. What you need to is avoid using your suspected food for some time and observe whether you are still having trouble. If the problem persists even after stopping the intake of your suspected food then you have a different culprit.

Another acid reflex remedy is to control you eating habits. Researches have shown that if you eat to your fullest or you stomach is too full then it will result in causing a pressure to the muscles at the base of esophagus called Lower Esophageal sphincter or LES. What LES does is that when you eat food it opens up to esophagus, after the food has entered the stomach it closes then lid. The reason for this is to make sure that none of the digestive acids leaks out. If the stomach is too full then it will put pressure on LES resulting in the escape of the digestive acids and the triggering of acid reflex.

And if you are a regular smoker then your smoking habit will cause LES to not close tightly. This will result in frequent heart burn. Or another thing that you might be interested in doing is avoiding stress. Stress also contributes towards acid reflex.

Acid reflex is not good for your body but there are many remedies around to avoid it.

Rants, and Epiphanies.....

The last month, and a half of my life has been horrible. There has been drama after lingering drama, and just stress. Although this year has been one of the worst since horrid "2000", I can say that I have learned a lot of things. I have had a lot of "Self" discovery. Through some bad relationships I've learned to "Wake up" so to speak. I've seen people's "True colors" through these situations. It's honestly just soo overbearing how things can turn out. I haven't cried soo much in my life as i'ved cried this year. It's weird because I am NEVER that emotional, but, lately i've been VERY emotional. It's just that soo much is happening soo fast, and so soon. It's hard to control my feelings, and it's extremely hard to hold them in. I used to be the type of person that can hold in how I felt, and "Brush" it off, but, I just can't do that with all of this.

I have to express the pain that I am feeling. It's not healthy for me to keep my feelings deep within my heart. So, I am going to start expressing how I feel. I guess I'll start by brainstorming what i've learned on here.

Things that i've learned:

  • I WILL NEVER EVER get into another "closeted" relationship with a man who is mutual friends with people that I know.
  • I WILL ALWAYS put ME first because when it all boils down to it, there is no one you can depend on MORE than yourself.
  • I Will NOT put myself out there for others that do not do the same.
  • I WILL start to chose my "friends" carefully
  • I WILL be more positive.
  • I WILL be better with my financial situation, and not be as frivolous when it come to spending money.

I am going back to school, and as the days go by the more apprehensive I become.   After "current" events i just don't know how to take people.   I mean, as Ryan said "I can't let a few bad apples spoil a bunch", but, trust is a hard thing to come by these days.  I trust myself fully, but, as for others that's a definite  negative.

I've been too good of a friend to others, and have not been as well of a friend to myself.  I haven't taken care of myself as well as I've taken care of others.   If I took more care of myself I wouldn't be in certain situations like I am now.

Now, I would like to give some "Shout outs" to some people.

To TRICIA:

I think it's really sad how our friendship has seemingly ended over some miscomunications, misunderstandings, assumptions, and not being able to communicate properly.  It has hurts me deeply how you've now have questioned my trust over something soo irrelevant.  I don't have to say a million times that I was a true friend to you because I know I was, and you should have honestly known that.  I think you would know that if you'd just gave it a chance, but, seems that you can't see past something that is clouding your mind.

I honestly hope one day that you will wake up, and see the "truth" in the situation, and realize how blinded you really were/ are.  I don't know where to pin point  what was the cause all of this, but,  it's something that's just terrible.  I am letting this go.  I've had my good times with you, and, I cared alot about you.  i've gone out of my way to help you many times as well as with other friends.  Maybe it's just time to move on, I don't know.  I had some really good times/ convos with you.  I just hope one day you will see that again.  I don't know if we'll be as good of friends again, but, i guess c'est la vie.

To APRIL:

You're crazy, and phyco, but, I love you.  You've truly have shown me how you can be a wonderful friend. You've had my back soo many times as I've had yours.  One day for being the person you're you will get what you want out of life, and things will start going right for you.  I'm glad, and always will be glad to have became friends with you.

To RYAN:

you're my brother from another mother.  You took care of me, and have even "Fought" my battles.  I've never questioned your friendship.  I know we hated eachother at one point, but, it was all out of love.  You're grown up to be awesome.  Thank you for being my friend!

To MICHELLE:

I love you to death girl.  You have never once not been the one I can depend on.  I love how I can call you, and we can go on for hours, and hours talking about what's going on in our lives.  You have never steered me wrong.  You've always kept it "Real", and believed in me, and I will alwlays love you for that.

To MORGAN:

I love how I can confide in you as well, as you can confide in me.  You've always helped me brainstorm my issues, and helped me make better decisions, and have also been real with who I should get "OUT" of my life.

To MELANIE:

I love your company as well, as your views, and intelligence.  You've helped me make some "Mature" decisions, and have helped me see things in a better "light".

To CATHY:

Thanking you for listening to me, and giving me advice.  You're awesome.

I honestly LOVE all you guys the same, and I hope that things will be better for all of you when I leave, and go on with my life.

Theda

After she had just "killed" elmo on xmas.

When I decided to force her to wear a hoodie because it was cold outside

What you can't see here is her cleverness. I've never had such a fiendishly clever critter. She learned tricks without exactly being taught (she would gladly stand up and turn in a circle for a treat), she knew if she stacked shoes up she could climb them and get to door knobs or windows and freak me out. With her in the room folding laundry became a game of hide and seek. She never turned down an opportunity to play, she was never cross or moody. She loved being in the car and seeing new places. How could I not miss her?

Pete and I so appreciate everyone's love and support. I especially feel lucky to have so many people who "get it". I love you guys, thanks for sticking by me.

Melora and Daniel DeJesus at DCTV

The show went really really well, the performance was fantastic! Daniel DeJesus is a great addition to Melora's music. the setlist was around 9 songs or so. i videotaped everything but the first song because i thought i hit record but didn't after all. the setlist kinda goes like this (from my memory)
1. goldfrapp cover
2. american girl
3. wicked dickie
4. why don't you do right?
5. rose k.
6. rusty the skatemaker
7. song from a clockwork orange
8. cage in a cave
9. identity tokens

i think they played another song somewhere in there, but i cant remember. videos will be up soon sometime this week.

Verdugo Hotel

dalas' friend Lee from NYC is visiting Portland right now and staying with us. We have been doing some fun stuff! I love it when people come to town because we get to do our awesome Portland tourguide routine, which usually involves going hiking at the Gorge, eating lots of amazing food, Washington Park/zoo/Japanese gardens/arboretum stuff, etc. So fun! On Wednesday drove out to Stevenson, Washington with Ian to meet up with his friends Sean and Junko at the Walking Man Brewery. We saw some nice stuff on the way out, like a super patriotic bald eagle flying around and one perched on a giant nest. We also got to cross the "Bridge of the Gods" for the first time, and the Gods required a $1 toll booth fee.

Beer sampler! I love beer samplers.

Leaning tower of deliciousness: spring rolls!
